Ideological-Legal and Religious Values in the Life and Activities of Danylo Bratkowskyi

The article is devoted to the study of the participation and role of the Ukrainian noblemanD. Bratkovskyi in the social and religious life of Volyn in the last third of the 17th - early 18th centuries.According to the author, D. Bratkovsky was a notable figure in the history of Ukraine and the history of theOrthodox Church of Volyn in the second half of the 17th - early 18th centuries. On the one hand, he, as anactive and spirited man, educated and endowed with literary talent, sincerely tried to support Orthodoxy invarious spheres of his activity - at the sejmiks, during the «Lublin Meeting», directly in the estates whichwere in his possession. On the other hand, D. Bratkovskyi was a typical representative of his epoch andsocial status with all their contradictions and flaws. Thus, opposing violence against the Orthodoxy, he didnot hesitate to resort to violence against Uniates. Stressing in his poems about the need to support the clergy'ssecular brothers, Bratkovskyi could afford to beat publicly the brotherhood deacon. He also tried to copewith the troubles in the Lutsk Brotherhood in rather an ambiguous way. It was hardly possible to instruct themembers of the Brotherhood spreading the pasquinades, in which the author ridiculed/mocked at thebrothers. However, such contradictions in the actions of D. Bratkovskyi do not compromise his historicalimage, but, on the contrary, give us the opportunity to see a real person with his inherent traits and feelings.
